People think if it is simpler, it is dumber.

Somehow that's how it look; dumber, but not how it is.

i see this all the time. the simple version feels “too easy” so people add noise just to feel clever.

Spot on. Too many startups act like mini-corporates instead of treating themselves as projects searching for a business model — not companies preserving one.

I’m all for simplicity. What do you think of the thought that to some degree the reason outcome is complex is not the selfish need to be seen as useful, but rather that that is seen as the only way to make themselves feel like they can help and contribute to the project. Just the best they can think of. It’s natural for one to believe that grand projects are complex. Many indeed are.

yeah i get that. most people aren’t trying to be difficult, they just assume “important work” has to be complex. simplicity feels like doing nothing, so they add layers to feel useful. it’s a wiring problem more than an ego problem.

You are speaking my language - "What did you do today/this week that moved us closer to our business goals" was something I asked my team members. If they can't articulate it then I need to help them link their activity to our impact so they can then articulate it to others in the business

exactly. if people can’t explain the impact of what they did, it usually means they never had a clear target to begin with.
